New year, new dancers!

2020 brings two new Company Dancers to Scottish Dance Theatre: João Castro and Glenda Gheller. We are excited to welcome these two artists into our versatile ensemble of dancers based here in Dundee.

Artistic Director, Joan Clevillé said:
“The dancers that make up our ensemble have always been the greatest asset of the company. They are unique artists with a story to tell and a voice of their own. I had the opportunity to collaborate with Glenda in 2018 in the creation of Team V for VERVE, the postgraduate company of Northern School of Contemporary Dance. I was blown away by her talent and hunger to learn and I am thrilled to be back in the studio with her. Dance has taken João from his native home in Brazil to all corners of the world, and now to Scotland. I was captivated by his versatility and maturity during the audition process and I can’t wait for our audiences to meet him”

Glenda Gheller, who is originally from Asiago in Italy, started her professional training in ballet and contemporary at Galleria Spazio Danza directed by Stefania Pigato. She also joined Academy 3.6.0, a program where she worked with Fabrizio Monteverde, Michele Merola and Rosanna Broccanello performing works by Loris Petrillo, Angelo Monaco and Arturo Cannistrà (Aterballetto). She continued her education at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds. Last year she completed her MA degree in Contemporary Dance Performance.

During her time at Northern, Glenda worked with and performed pieces by Mattias Ekholm, Suzie Davies, Gavin Coward, Jamaal Burkmar and Tamsin Fitzgerald. She joined the postgraduate company VERVE, under the artistic direction of former SDT dancer Matthew Robinson, where she also worked with our Artistic Director Joan Clevillé in creating Team V.

João Castro started his professional dance training at CEFAR (Center for Artistic Training - Palacio das Artes), in Belo Horizonte (Brazil) in 2011. That same year, he joined Ballet Jovem Palacio das Artes, under the artistic direction of Andrea Maia (Balé da Cidade de São Paulo).

In 2013, he participated in Viva, Vive!, a collaboration between Ballet Jovem and Black Box Dance Company, and in October 2014 he joined Baltic Dance Theatre, in Gdansk (Poland), where he had the opportunity to work with Jiří Kylián and Patrick Delcroix.

Most recently, João performed in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake (UK and International Tour), including Sadler's Wells season and a special performance at the Olivier Awards 2019.

You will be able to see João and Glenda in action with Scottish Dance Theatre very soon!
